Great Giana Sisters

Great Giana Sisters

by Wencke Schuncken

We are going to honor two female characters instead as we cannot split them up! Not sure if they're twins, but they're definitely sisters! Whoever had a commodore 64 back in the days, probably will recognize these two ladies: the Great Giana Sisters, also known as the female version of Nintendo's Super Mario Brothers. The similarity in concept, visuals and gameplay cannot be ignored. Actually the main difference is that Nintendo used male characters and the game only could be played on the NES console. The commodore 64 (C64) and Amiga had the honor to present the Great Giana Sisters with two lovely girls, although lovely …

The story begins when little Giana is fast asleep and is having a strange dream. She finds herself trapped in a strange mysterious world where everything is completely different as she's used to. In this world there's hardly gravity which gives her the feeling she can fly. Also very strange and unusual buildings and structures appear on the horizon. Each old grotto and deserted castled she enteres, seemed to hide lots of secrets. Not only frightening and hideous creatures appear but they’re also trying to attack her! The only way for Giana to get out of this world is if she would find a huge magical diamond. But where is it hidden? A long way to go but luckily she's not alone. Her sister Maria can dream too you know!

Within a dream world of 33 stages the two ladies need to cross this world unscratched. While walking and jumping around, they'll meet terrible creatures (for example crazy lobsters, dancing eyes, neurotic appendices, spiders, dragons) and many obstacles like holes, beds of nails and barrels on fire. During the adventure they collect rectangular blue dream crystals to raise their stamina (one extra life in exchange for 100 crystals). As they're trapped in a strange world, not all crystals are visible. Some are hidden in magic chambers or in enemy creatures. This also counts for the extra bonus items (power-ups) to add extra powers to the sisters! What a world…

While taking a look at their appearance, I'll bet 10 dollars that the sisters are twins. The only difference is the color of their hair and cloths. Giana has blond hair, wears a red top and a blue skirt. Maria has red / green hair, wears also a red top but preferred a purple skirt (great matching Maria!). Besides the red top both wear a red bow in their hair. But it all changes a bit when they find a power-up which changes the hairdo from classic neat to punk. The punky hairdo has different kind of colors and looks like the sisters had an electricity shock. Nevertheless the punk hairdo is ideal to break bricks which contain treasures and even more extra features.

I'm not sure when and where the Giana Sisters were born. But there are a lot of Italian girls named Giana, meaning God is Gracious. So let's presume that the Giana Sisters are indeed original Italians. Also the age is a mystery to me. While checking out the packaging covers, you'll either see a sexy 20 year something blond woman or two 40 year old women dressed up as punks. In the game itself it seems like you’re playing with 6 year old characters. No cover projects a correct representation of the Giana Sisters in the game itself and no real age can be determined. But does it actually matter? The most important thing is that these two lovely girls were one of the first female characters to ensure a lot of enjoyable hours in 1987, whether on Commodore 64 or Amiga. Those were the days …
